Everything you need to know about the CIA 'Vault 7' Wikileaks files

Medical Devices are the Next Security Nightmare

Hacked medical devices make for scary headlines. Dick Cheney ordered changes to his pacemaker to better protect it from hackers. Johnson & Johnson warned customers about a security bug in one of its insulin pumps last fall. And St. Jude has spent months dealing with the fallout of vulnerabilities in some of the company’s defibrillators, pacemakers, and other medical electronics. You’d think by now medical device companies would have learned something about security reform. Experts warn they haven’t.

Children's messages in CloudPets data breach

An open database containing links to more than 2 million voice messages recorded on cuddly toys has been discovered, cybersecurity researcher Troy Hunt has revealed. The messages were created by owners of CloudPets soft toys. At one point, the data was even held to ransom, Mr Hunt says. The animals are advertised as being toys that enable people to record and send greetings via a phone app and the toy itself. The creatures are marketed as cuddly devices to connect children to working parents or grandparents.

Cool or utterly terrifying - you decide.

Handle is a research robot that stands 6.5 ft tall, travels at 9 mph and jumps 4 feet vertically. It uses electric power to operate both electric and hydraulic actuators, with a range of about 15 miles on one battery charge. Handle uses many of the same dynamics, balance and mobile manipulation principles found in the quadruped and biped robots we build, but with only about 10 actuated joints, it is significantly less complex. Wheels are efficient on flat surfaces while legs can go almost anywhere: by combining wheels and legs Handle can have the best of both worlds.

Here Are Some of Our Favourite Products of CES 2017

CES 2017 has drawn to a close for another year, so I have featured some of my highlights from the show that include robots, wearables, drones, smart home tech, smartphones and cars. In addition, gadgets announced at CES have been included on this month's featured products page. We usually don't feature products from major OEMs like Samsung, Nvidia, HTC, Huawei, and LG because most of the really cutting-edge innovations tend to come from independent makers, and startups but every January we make an exception.  Before I tell you what I think will be the major tech trend of 2017, I'll start with a few observations and list my favourite products in each category. Disclaimer, I didn't attend again this CES in person, but instead followed the event remotely via live online broadcasts and social media.

These stations provide highly accurate data but their cost limits the quantity of deployments, leaving large gaps in coverage.

This allows the malware to compromise a single light globe from up to 400 metres away.  The worm can then spread from a single smart bulb to those nearby thanks to the use of these skeleton keys.

Internet providers could be the key to securing all the IoT devices already out there

A cyber attack on the Internet infrastructure company Dyn on October 21 hindered internet browsing for hours while the company scrambled to restore service. The as-yet unidentified attackers were helped by a millions-strong army of Internet of Things devices, including enterprise webcams and DVRs, that were quietly conscripted into a botnet to launch the denial-of-service attack. The incident is the latest reminder that many IoT devices aren’t adequately secured. These types of attacks will continue as long as a large enough number of vulnerable devices exists. So the question facing the security industry is how to shrink that number.

Google Home and Google Wifi aren't going to be able to fix the Internet of Things

The Internet of Things — many of us have a less-kind name for it — wasn't going to be fixed in a day. It wasn't going to be fixed in the blazing sun in Mountain View in May, when Google first announced its plans for Google Assistant and Google Home. And it wasn't going to fixed today when Google announced more details of its long-awaited (I'd say "overdue," really) competitor for the Amazon Echo.  And it's not going to be fixed a month from now, when Google Home ships. Or a little later in the year when Google Wifi joins it. No. The Internet of Things is vast and complex, and we're lucky to have a hub that manages to even loosely wrangle all those things together.
