Why Ethereum’s (ETH) Vitalik Buterin Boycotted Consensus 2018

As the Consensus 2018 event came to a close only a few hours ago, one participant was visibly missing from the event in New York. That person is none other than the co-founder, creator and inventor of Ethereum (ETH), Vitalik Buterin. Mr. Buterin was also one of the original founders of Bitcoin Magazine that has gained prominence in the Crypto-space over the years. Buterin had informed the Crypto-verse of his intention to Boycott the Consensus Summit this year via a tweet a while back in mid February.

Intel’s Drone and AI Technology Will Help Restore the Great Wall of China

We all know that the Great Wall of China is one among the great wonders of the world. Anyone who has seen it in a picture or in real life is bound to praise the majestic man-made wonder. Nevertheless, being a structure that was built 2,700 years ago, it sure has taken a beating from the ever-changing weather and the passage of time, the Jiankou section in particular. The section is one of the Great Wall’s steepest stretches that runs over 20 kilometers at 1,141 meters above sea level.

The world is becoming a computer, says CEO of worldwide computer company Microsoft

At its Build 2018 developer conference in Seattle, Washington, on Monday, Microsoft showered attention on artificial intelligence, as it did last year, leaving Windows chatter for later. When Steve Ballmer still steered the ship, Microsoft's message to developers was as simple as repeating the word "developers" over and over in froth and frenzy; under CEO Satya Nadella's command, the message is similarly solicitous but more nuanced and tempered.

Can IOTA’S blockless blockchain become the IoT standard?

IOTA’s blockless blockchain was designed specifically to handle machine-to-machine micro-payments. Will it become the IoT’s distributed ledger of choice? Just when you think it’s safe to start casually dropping the word “blockchain” at social gatherings (on the assumption that you know more about it than most people), you discover that odd eccentric neighbor who counters with “Well, yes, blockchain is good. But what about Tangle?”

How blockchain technology is changing the security landscape in the banking sector

Blockchain, the technology that is used in the popular cryptocurrency 'Bitcoin', is revolutionary in many ways. It addresses multiple challenges associated with digital transactions, such as double spending and currency reproduction. Employing blockchain also reduces the cost of online transactions while simultaneously increasing authenticity and security. The upshot is that the need for payment processors, custodians, and reconciliation bodies is eliminated. These benefits are amongst the prime reasons why the technology is being extensively deployed within the banking sector.

Curl disclosure, beyond the headline

As part of an on-going conversation between the IOTA Team and security researchers from Boston University and MIT DCI, the teams published their report on a vulnerability in Curl today. On August 8th, the IOTA Team implemented a safety precaution by switching Curl with Keccak-384 (wrapped as “Kerl”, as a tongue-in-cheek homage to what it was replacing), but no user funds were ever at risk prior to the upgrade.

Cryptographic vulnerabilities in IOTA

Last month, Ethan Heilman, Tadge Dryja, Madars Virza, and I took a look at IOTA, currently the 8th largest cryptocurrency with a $1.9B market cap. In its repositories on GitHub, we found a serious vulnerability — the IOTA developers had written their own hash function, Curl, and it produced collisions (when different inputs hash to the same output). Once we developed our attack, we could find collisions using commodity hardware within just a few minutes, and forge signatures on IOTA payments. We informed the IOTA developers, they patched their system, and we wrote a vulnerability report. The current version of IOTA does not have the vulnerabilities we found, but there’s more to be said about how this happened and what’s going on with cryptocurrencies right now.

'How foul-mouthed hackers messed up my life'

As our "smart" homes fill up with internet-connected devices, the risk grows that hackers will find weak points in our networks, steal our data and hijack our lives. What should we be doing about it? It's not normally a good idea to sign off your Powerpoint presentation pitching for work with an expletive. But this is what Gary Berman did - albeit unknowingly. Hackers had broken in to his home network via an internet-connected printer and sabotaged his files.

Security Surprises Arising from the Internet of Things (IoT)

My brother can’t function in the morning until he has a cup of coffee. So I use his daily routine as an example.  Picture my brother stumbling down to the kitchen one morning only to find his internet-enabled coffee maker won’t work. There’s a message on his iPhone: “We have taken control of your coffee pot and unless you pay $5, you won’t have your coffee.” This actually hasn’t happened. At least, not yet.

Fix crap Internet of Things security, booms Internet daddy Cerf

Vint Cerf, one of the fathers of the internet, has weighed in on Internet of Things security, warning that a Mirai botnet-style incident could happen again unless vendors start taking responsibility for their goods.  “The biggest worry I have is that people building [IoT] devices will grab a piece of open source software or operating system and just jam it into the device and send it out into the wild without giving adequate thought and effort to securing the system and providing convenient user access to those devices,” Cerf told the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) organisation at its 50th Turing Award celebrations.
