Effectively implementing Internet of Things technologies and advanced analytics represents a trillion-dollar opportunity for industrial companies. However successful adoption involves an end-to-end, holistic approach, affecting practically every aspect of traditional business operations. Now is the time for companies to evaluate their IoT strategies, draw upon lessons learned to date from across market sectors, and position themselves for success going forward.
The IoT Solutions World Congress (IoTSWC), the largest international event devoted to innovation in the industrial internet of things (IIoT), will return to Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue from 29 to 31 October 2019. In its fifth year, the IoTSWC will reveal the real scope of the digital transformation in different industrial sectors and businesses that are incorporating disruptive technologies such as IoT, blockchain and artificial intelligence into their activity. The major suppliers of industrial solutions and information technology providers heading this paradigm shift will take part as exhibitors, together with experts who will present the trends that are driving this rapidly-expanding market.
The IoT Tech Expo Europe; will arrive in Amsterdam this June to host 500+ industry leaders exploring the future of enterprise technology with a two-day conference stream covering the future of industrial IoT. Speakers within this conference stream include senior representatives from Airbus, Pirelli, EY, Transdev, Siemens and Tata Steel. Europe’s leading IoT conference will return to the RAI Amsterdam on the 19-20 June and is set to welcome 10,000 attendees across the 4 co-located events comprising of IoT, AI, big data, cyber security, cloud and blockchain.

On Friday 30th November I attended the VCT and EIS Investor Forum in London. The event enabled private investors to meet fund managers in person and learn how different VCT and EIS funds compare. The event featured an expo, cinema, exhibition space, and seminar room where talks and panel debates took place throughout the day. Attendees were given the opportunity to gain industry insights and understand what is going on more generally across the entire small-cap equity market landscape.

New innovations and striking developments in the field of AI have changed the face of technology in the 21st century. The high competency of this technology and near to zero fail rate has found it a strong beneficiary in highly specialised sectors such as defence. The ethics of autonomous warfare and defence will be one of the topics covered by AI and robotics experts during The World AI Show Amsterdam, a conference held by Trescon, that will take place on November 8, 2018 (use discount code "WAISA-WEBIO").

As we arrive back in the UK following a hugely successful IoT Solutions World Congress event in Barcelona, I wanted to take a few minutes to reflect on the show but also pass on my thoughts on what has been a pretty busy first 3 months for me at IOTech. One of my first roles since joining IOTech as a Solutions Architect was to help put together the EdgeX Foundry Community Demonstrator in time for its first scheduled appearance at the Barcelona event.

The world’s most advanced security product for IoT devices was unveiled yesterday at the IoT Solutions World Congress. Developed by the UK company, Crypto Quantique, it has the capabilities required to become the foundational security product for every IoT device in the world. The foundational technology consists of the world’s first quantum driven secure chip (QDSC) on silicon which, when combined with cryptographic APIs, provides highly scalable, integratable, easy-to-implement and seamless end-to-end security for any connected device.

Before I begin, it is vital that I make one thing very clear. By writing this piece, it is not my intention to judge or undermine event organisers. They must be congratulated for all their hard work, and it’s important to remember that conferences are a platform for innovation. They facilitate connections, inspire new thinking, and enable innovators to promote themselves and obtain much-needed visibility as a result of being given a forum to speak and exhibit. It's always a great pleasure to cover our favourite conferences, and include them in our 2018 Conference Directory. We consider it as our duty to support them, so keep up the good work!

As technology becomes ever more fundamental to citizens, societies and economies, Simon Montford, the founder of WEB3//IOT visited the After Money money symposium looking at issues from identity and privacy to decentralisation, autonomy and democracy itself. I recently attended a two-day event called After Money, which heralded the end of an 18-month research project of the same name, supported by the Economic and Social Research Council in collaboration with the Royal Bank of Scotland and the New Economics Foundation. It took place on the 20th and 21st of November at the City Arts Centre in Edinburgh and was organised by The Centre for Design Informatics at the University of Edinburgh.

The run up to the festive season is always a busy time for event organisers and delegates alike. Peak conference season means there are so many to choose from, but in order to get the best ROI it's vital to remain laser focused. This is primarily because there are not only financial costs that need to be accounted for, such as travel and accommodation, but also intangible ones. Everything from the amount of emotional energy expended (if you don't feel exhausted after a conference, you're not doing it right), to opportunity costs - time is (or should be) your most valuable asset. Here's a look back at some of the events I attended last month, that were definitely worth expending time and energy for!

I attended TechExpo which took place at 155 Bishopsgate in London on the 24th and 25th October. The venue had a warm, sophisticated, and contemporary vibe and it was conveniently located within a few minutes' walk from Liverpool Street station. It featured four theatre-style rooms, and an open plan area where attendees could hang out and network. This area was also where the expo was located featuring several augmented and virtual reality demos, an assortment of booths, and a separate section dedicated to fintech startups.

Having spent an amazing 2 days in Edinburgh with back to back speeches/presentations, its easy to understand how I have yet to come off this incredible buzz. Firstly, Edinburgh University. A few words which would best describe such a forward thinking University? Simple: Pioneers and visionaries! It did not take much to convince us to join their recent Hackathon using the newly released triple bearer network LoPy modules.

Last week I attended the 3rd annual Commercial UAV Show. I can't believe it's been a year since I covered the previous event, and wrote "There's no business like drone business". It took place on the 19th and 20th of October at ExCeL in London. The first thing I noticed was that the number of exhibitors and attendees appeared to be down compared to the previous year. I felt, however, that the quality of companies and delegates had increased. Last year l got the impression that many who attended were there out of curiosity. While milling around the expo floor, I came across an industry analysts with a remit to gather data and obtain market intelligence, an entrepreneur scoping out commercial opportunities, and an intern who had been dispatched on a fact-finding mission by her boss.

France is home to some seriously dynamic IoT tech startups. Two of the most well-known examples are SigFox, the LPWA network technology pioneer (the Gallic startup raised France’s biggest VC round ever of $115M), and ride sharing trailblazer BlaBlaCar. Other examples include Lima, D-Vine, Invoxia, Parrot, Withings (acquired by Nokia), Sen.se, and my personal favourite Aldebaran Robotics (acquired by SoftBank); maker of some of the cutest humanoids on the planet - I met Pepper at IoTTechExpo, and Nao on the IBM Watson stand at MWC.

The Europas is an annual conference and awards ceremony for technology startups. The event was organised and hosted by technology journalist Mike Butcher MBE, and took place yesterday (June 14) in London, at The Grand Hall at Old Billingsgate. As tech conferences go, it was a reasonably relaxed affair, with no VIP lists or sectioned off areas in order, to facilitate networking and knowledge transfer between attendees.
