According to the company's Indiegogo campaign page, it works by stimulating sensory nerves that cause the brain to send out pain-blocking neural pulses throughout the body. Quell comes with an app that enables the wearer to automatically track and personalize their pain therapy.
Once an electrode is attached to Quell it is placed inside a sport band, and worn around the upper calf. The electrode is in direct contact with the skin, where it goes to work sending neural pulses to the brain which then stimulates the body's natural pain relief response.
According to Wikipedia, over 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, and according to Pain UK, 2.6 million Brits are affected. This cost the British tax payer £6.7 billion last year (not to mention the economic impact of the 4.2% of the working population who were prevented from doing so due to immobility).
Demand exceeded the company's expectations, after the initial batch of pre-orders sold out in less than six hours. The special offer price of $199 (£130) has, however, been extended for another 48hrs. The estimated shipping date is June 2015, but please not this product is only available to US residents. We have contacted NeuroMetrix to find out if and when it will become available to UK citizens, and will add their response to the comments below when we hear back from them.
