Posted By Simon Montford on Nov 30 2015 Amazon released further details about a fleet of delivery drones that the company hopes will soon be used to carry packages directly to it's customers, within thirty minutes of an order. The design allows it to fly both vertically and horizontally, and is similar to Sony's VTOL drone. Amazon's drone has a range of 15 miles, but it's top speed has yet to be revealed. Amazon decided to start testing their delivery drones outside of the USA, because America's equivalent of the CAA, has been less than enthusiastic about the possibility of allowing commercial drones to operate within federal airspace. Whereas other countries, such as the UK, Canada, and Australia are taking a far more drone-friendly approach. The online ecommerce giant released footage (see video below) over the weekend of Jeremy Clarkson, the controversial ex-BBC presenter, showcasing how the prototype drone could be used to deploy a pair of new replacement football shoes to a little girl, after one of them got chewed up by the family fido. Of course the story ends well as the replacement shoes arrive just in time. |
