Mobile World Congress took place in Barcelona from the 22nd-25th February 2016. It is the world’s largest gathering for the mobile industry. The reason why MWC is so important, in the context of the Internet of Things, is that the smartphone has become an integral part of the IoT ecosystem. In fact it is rapidly becoming the centre of it; a hub for all things connected. Everything we touch from televisions, wearables, and appcessories such as smart umbrellas, smart wallets, and smart luggage, to cars and domestic appliances will increasingly be controlled via smartphone apps.

Mobile World Congress took place in Barcelona from the 22nd-25th February 2016. It is the world’s largest gathering for the mobile industry, and I was there to cover the show. Here's a selection of photos and videos taken during my week in Spain. As it was my first time attending the conference, I found it overwhelming! Due to the bus and metro strike, getting around the city was a major challenge, but getting to and from the conference centre was a breeze compared to the real challenge of finding my way around the vast series of halls that played host to thousands of the world's leading mobile technology companies, with the exception of Apple.

Most of today's consumer drones are controlled via short-range signals like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or radio airwaves, so their capabilities are severely restricted, unlike military UAVs such as the Predator, that can be operated by a person located thousands of miles away. By utilising a 5G cellular network, however, a consumer drone could theoretically (regulation aside) be controlled from anywhere and have limitless range just like military drones do today. Currently 4G is incapable of providing this capability because it can't offer real-time feedback as there's simply too much of a delay between when you send a signal and when you get a response, known as latency.

Scottish tech startup Nautilus Beam Ltd (based in Edinburgh, United Kingdom) came second last night in the prestigious TechCrunch Pitch-Off that took place during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Co-founders Dr Tim Willis and Simon Montford pitched their smartwatch text app Tusi to a crowded room of tech startup entrepreneurs, and a panel of investors. In addition to winning tickets to TechCrunchDisrupt New York in May, the founders also won a 4G-enabled Panasonic Nubo camera. Immediately after their successful pitch, the company released a public beta of Tusi for Google Wear devices, which is available to download for free from Google Play.

Yesterday I attended what for me was the highlight of the entire show so far; Keynote 8 of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona: "Qualcomm & MERCEDES AMG Petronas Formula One Team". The event was billed as a keynote speech by Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, but it turned out to be more of a "fireside chat". I live broadcast the panel via Periscope, which consisted of Derek Aberle (Qualcomm’s president), Lewis Hamilton (Formula One World Champion), and Paddy Lowe (Executive Director, Technical Mercedes AMG Petronas). The session was moderated by Nicki Shields, TV Presenter & Journalist for Formula E & CNN.

IoT Tech Expo took place in London, 10-11 February 2016. The event covered many different industry sectors including Manufacturing, Transport, Health, Logistics, Government, Energy and Automotive. Exhibitors from across Europe showcased cutting edge technologies, and over 200 speakers shared industry knowledge and insights. As an official media partner, I attended on behalf of WEB3//IOT. As a media partner, WEB3//IOT was invited to cover the IoT Tech Expo, which took place in London on the 10-11 February. The event covered many different industry sectors including manufacturing, transport, health, logistics, government, energy and automotive. Exhibitors from across Europe showcased cutting-edge technologies, and over 200 speakers shared industry knowledge and insights. As I wandered through the expo area, I came across an exhibitor called ThingWorx, that provides an apps platform that makes it easy for developers to build, deploy and evolve applications for the IoT.

Have you ever been dissed by a robot? Until today, I hadn't either. It's a weird feeling, being rejected by an inanimate object that doesn't even know you exist, but yet you can't help feeling dejected. I almost wanted to tap it on the shoulder and give it a piece of my mind and say "didn't your parents teach you any manners?", but what would that have achieved? It isn't human, so has no parents. Instead, I just had to take it on the chin, leave my dignity where I stood, and walk away. Pepper is cute, but boy can it act like a little brat!

As everyone in the free world knows, it was Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, and due to the 8hr time difference between London and San Francisco, live coverage of the game didn't commence till 11pm. This meant that an early night was out of the question; not a great start to my busy working week. In fact, I didn't hit the sack (no pun intended), until 5am so when my alarm went off at the usual time, I felt more than a little bleary-eyed.

This Sunday it's Super Bowl 50, so it's time to start getting ready for the big game! As a 49ers fan, however, my enthusiasm for NFL has understandably somewhat dwindled compared to previous years. Let's face it, the 49ers sucked this season! Thankfully my misery will soon turn to joy as I have some good news to report. Microsoft will soon get Hololens into the hands of us consumers, and when they do - it will be a game changer, literally! Augmented reality (AR) headsets, like this one, will soon make experiencing live sports events, such as the Super Bowl, a totally immersive and awesome experience.

As a species we are becoming more and more connected. Today fitness trackers are pretty basic, but tomorrow they will become embedded precision instruments capable of monitoring our health 24/7. Our cars will be self-driving, our homes will be operated by powerful artificial intelligence, and one leading academic recently predicted that robots will be able to read our minds by 2030 - welcome to the future!

Held in Las Vegas every year (Jan 6-9), it has acted as a showcase for innovation and breakthrough technology for more than 40 years. Today it is one of the world's leading technology events.

Expect to see some very exciting technologies come our way in 2016. There is no doubt that the pace of innovation will continue to accelerate, resulting in a glut of new consumer devices that, only a few years ago, were products of our imagination and props in science fiction movies. For example Tony Stark's A.I. assistant, J.A.R.V.I.S. (Just A Rather Very Intelligent System), featured in the Iron Man series of movies, looks like it will become a reality this year.

A Hungarian startup called Codie, that successfully raised $96,306 back in May 2015 via crowdfunding platform Indiegogo, has started shipping its robotic toy. The device offers a fun way to teach kids how to code. The campaign was so successful that it raised one third of its funding goal in only two days, and ended up exceeding it by 115%.

A UK registered company based in Bristol called OXY Technologies, has launched a campaign on Indiegogo for a smartwatch that will be able to connect with Android, iOS and Windows 10 smartphones. The makers are working with the open source community to accelerate development, and improve the product.

Pillow Talk is a smart pillow that connects to a wristband via an app. It works by live streaming the sound of your loved one's heartbeat directly to the pillow thanks to a tiny little speaker. I met Joanna Montgomery, founder of Little Riot, the company behind the product, at TechCrunch Disrupt in London last week. She was extremely passionate about her product, and provisionally agreed to speak at our LoveTech event that will take place in Edinburgh on 15th February 2016.

Hello Barbie is set to become one of the hottest toys this holiday season. The wi-fi enabled doll comes with an app that enables the plastic princess to record and play back speech. Sounds like fun, until parents discover that hackers could utilise vulnerabilities in the toy's software to spy on their children! It could also be used to collect personal data, such as the home addresses of children and recordings of them talking to the doll.

Experts have been talking about the potential of wireless charging for a while now, but so far not a single commercial product capable of wirelessly charging has entered production. I remember watching a TED talk by Eric Giler of MIT, in which he told the audience that within the near future, our wired lives would become untangled. He then went on to demo a prototype wireless charging technology called WiTricity, which back in 2009, when he did the talk, was supposed to be a "near-to-market" invention.

Luke Roberts, the makers of Fluxo, claim that it's the world’s first smart LED lamp. On the basis that I've come across plenty of smart bulbs like the Misfit Bolt and the Hue, but never a smart lamp, I'll assume this claim is correct. Like the aforementioned smart bulbs, FLUXO can be controlled via a smartphone or tablet, enabling an entire room to become dynamically “painted” with whatever colour you desire, at the click of a button.

This weekend over 50,000 people are attending Brick2015, an annual Lego convention taking place at ExCel in London. I have been invited by a Hungarian-based company called Vengit that's exhibiting a prototype of their latest product, "Towers Game". The eventual aim is that the game will enable up to sixteen opponents to construct Lego towers armed with catapults. You can probably guess the rest...

The Parrot micro-drone and hydrofoil only costs £139.99 ($179.00). It is essentially, well, a small drone attached to a hydrofoil, but what a great combo! As the boat surges forward, carried by the Parrot, it is lifted almost entirely out of the water to reduce drag, thereby making the boat go faster. The micro-drone propels the boat forward by rotating upwards.

ONAGOfly is a micro-drone with an on-board camera so it can take stills and record video. It can be controlled via a smartphone and comes with infrared obstacle avoidance. Pledges start at $179 for the first 200 units, and $199 thereafter. The company's estimated shipping date is February 2016.

MATRIX is a smart hub for the home and workplace that can be used to carry out a wide range of tasks. Its creators have designed it to be open, which means third party developers can produce apps that can be used to utilise its incredible versatility and power. The company's Kickstarter campaign, which is about to end, has so far raised over $100,000.
