HEAVY INDUSTRY IS DRIVING ADOPTION OF MACHINE AUTOMATION

11/11/2019

Comments

Posted By Simon Montford on Nov 11 2019
The Internet as we know it is transitioning from a centralised network that primarily connects humans (Web 2.0), to a decentralised network that primarily connects autonomous machines (Web 3.0). Tomorrow's Internet will not only be more machine-centric, but (hopefully) more decentralised, democratic, ethical, and efficient. The three primary ingredients that are making this a reality are IoT for machine connectivity, AI for machine automation, and DLT (blockchain) for distributed machine interaction.

It goes without saying that the IoT has been changing the world at a drastic rate. The interconnectivity people can integrate into key parts of their daily lives has already changed how simple tasks are completed. Like many industries affected by the IoT, the construction industry is no exception. Not only are processes being changed and new cybersecurity concerns being addressed, but the IoT also has the potential to change how we design buildings of the future. Here are five ways IoT is impacting the construction industry.

AN AMICABLE REVOLUTION - UTOPIA OR DYSTOPIA?

12/21/2017

Post By Colin Cardwell on December 21, 2017
Montford's Rule is a new one for our times… “Every time there is a step change in technology it’s heralded as a revolution - now it's real,” he alleges. And Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the key. We are now no longer just looking at the loss of labour to technology that the evanescence of tasks that have for centuries required a high degree of intellect and evaluation. There’s a sense of urgency highlighted by the publication last month of arguably the U.K.'s most focused new industrial strategy to be announced in the past two and a half decades.

Post By Simon Montford on December 11, 2017
As technology becomes ever more fundamental to citizens, societies and economies, Simon Montford, the founder of WEB3//IOT visited the After Money money symposium looking at issues from identity and privacy to decentralisation, autonomy and democracy itself. I recently attended a two-day event called After Money, which heralded the end of an 18-month research project of the same name, supported by the Economic and Social Research Council in collaboration with the Royal Bank of Scotland and the New Economics Foundation. It took place on the 20th and 21st of November at the City Arts Centre in Edinburgh and was organised by The Centre for Design Informatics at the University of Edinburgh.

It sounded like something from the National Enquirer: another attention-grabbing headline to put alongside sightings of Elvis on the moon, and alien reptiles in Buckingham Palace. Yet the recent Wikileaks report, stating that the CIA can use smart televisions to monitor us, created quite a media storm. In fact the revelation was covered extensively by media outlets across the world.

Just getting your head around IoT (Internet of Things)? Open up, here comes IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) and the opportunities are as amazing as they are untapped. Despite both being brushed off as just the latest buzz words the proliferation of everyday devices made smart using embedded sensors that communicate over the internet such as Amazon Echo, Fitbit, Phillips Hue Light-bulbs and Nest are far from passing fads.

I attended TechExpo which took place at 155 Bishopsgate in London on the 24th and 25th October. The venue had a warm, sophisticated, and contemporary vibe and it was conveniently located within a few minutes' walk from Liverpool Street station. It featured four theatre-style rooms, and an open plan area where attendees could hang out and network. This area was also where the expo was located featuring several augmented and virtual reality demos, an assortment of booths, and a separate section dedicated to fintech startups.

A BIN SO SMART IT CAN SEGREGATE ITS OWN WASTE

I'm the CEO of a Polish technology company that has been intensively working for more than a year on creating the perfect bin, which can recognise, categorise, and sort trash as it is placed into it. The Bin-e is a response to the growing problem of segregation of garbage in places where waste is produced the most. According to recent statistics, every year Europeans produce over 213 million tons of garbage, of which only 30% is recycled!

One of the coolest things to come out of CES in Vegas this year was a life-size drone that's capable of flying passengers autonomously in the air for up to 20 minutes. The self-driving aerial vehicle is called the Ehang 184, and the company responsible for creating it has just been granted clearance for takeoff in order to test it over the skies of Nevada.

There are some fantastic events coming up later this month! Some of the highlights include IoT Tech Expo (Berlin), IoT Global Innovation Forum (Barcelona), and the Europas Conference and Awards (London). Unfortunately I can only attend one of them as they are taking place concurrently in three different major European cities. In the end I plumped for the Europas, because the founder and organiser, Mike Butcher, invited me well in advance. He also happens to be someone I've known for many years, and he kindly invited me to host a 20 minute panel titled "IOT: What Happens when Everything is Connected?", which was an offer I simply couldn't refuse!

Yawn, but what actually came next blew me away, “Powered by the Ethereum World Computer, embedded into the InterPlanetary File System.” That was enough for me. I’m in. Where do I sign?

The Internet of Things hype cycle is in overdrive, as someone working in the area this is theoretically great but it getting harder and harder to filter out the marketing hype. What is the Internet of Things? Some describe it as the ability to connect billions devices to the internet THEN auto-magically creating Trillions of dollars in revenues. Just connect any normal devices and let the good times roll right? If only...
