HEAVY INDUSTRY IS DRIVING ADOPTION OF MACHINE AUTOMATION

11/11/2019

Comments

Posted By Simon Montford on Nov 11 2019
The Internet as we know it is transitioning from a centralised network that primarily connects humans (Web 2.0), to a decentralised network that primarily connects autonomous machines (Web 3.0). Tomorrow's Internet will not only be more machine-centric, but (hopefully) more decentralised, democratic, ethical, and efficient. The three primary ingredients that are making this a reality are IoT for machine connectivity, AI for machine automation, and DLT (blockchain) for distributed machine interaction.

Post By Simon Montford on December 11, 2017
As technology becomes ever more fundamental to citizens, societies and economies, Simon Montford, the founder of WEB3//IOT visited the After Money money symposium looking at issues from identity and privacy to decentralisation, autonomy and democracy itself. I recently attended a two-day event called After Money, which heralded the end of an 18-month research project of the same name, supported by the Economic and Social Research Council in collaboration with the Royal Bank of Scotland and the New Economics Foundation. It took place on the 20th and 21st of November at the City Arts Centre in Edinburgh and was organised by The Centre for Design Informatics at the University of Edinburgh.

Just getting your head around IoT (Internet of Things)? Open up, here comes IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) and the opportunities are as amazing as they are untapped. Despite both being brushed off as just the latest buzz words the proliferation of everyday devices made smart using embedded sensors that communicate over the internet such as Amazon Echo, Fitbit, Phillips Hue Light-bulbs and Nest are far from passing fads.

THE COMMERCIAL UAV SHOW MUST GO ON

10/28/2016

Posted By Simon Montford on October 28, 2016
Last week I attended the 3rd annual Commercial UAV Show. I can't believe it's been a year since I covered the previous event, and wrote "There's no business like drone business". It took place on the 19th and 20th of October at ExCeL in London. The first thing I noticed was that the number of exhibitors and attendees appeared to be down compared to the previous year. I felt, however, that the quality of companies and delegates had increased. Last year l got the impression that many who attended were there out of curiosity. While milling around the expo floor, I came across an industry analysts with a remit to gather data and obtain market intelligence, an entrepreneur scoping out commercial opportunities, and an intern who had been dispatched on a fact-finding mission by her boss.

One of the coolest things to come out of CES in Vegas this year was a life-size drone that's capable of flying passengers autonomously in the air for up to 20 minutes. The self-driving aerial vehicle is called the Ehang 184, and the company responsible for creating it has just been granted clearance for takeoff in order to test it over the skies of Nevada.

It’s just the beginning for 5G. Yet if you look at the already extensive amount of media comment on the subject, it’s obvious that the industry has a clear idea of the services that it hopes 5G will support, in Massive IoT and in other sectors. What’s less certain is just how the technology will develop - indeed standardisation activities are just commencing.

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to “own the future” you should probably talk to John Curtis, co-founder and CEO of Revolutionall World. I heard him speaking at the regular IoT EDI Meetup (organised by Simon Montford of web3iot.com) on Wednesday 27 April, at Napier University’s Merchiston campus, an event which had attracted an eclectic mix of knowledgeable people working on subjects as diverse as algorithm design, apps for wearables, renewable energy strategy and big data.

Mobile World Congress took place in Barcelona from the 22nd-25th February 2016. It is the world’s largest gathering for the mobile industry. The reason why MWC is so important, in the context of the Internet of Things, is that the smartphone has become an integral part of the IoT ecosystem. In fact it is rapidly becoming the centre of it; a hub for all things connected. Everything we touch from televisions, wearables, and appcessories such as smart umbrellas, smart wallets, and smart luggage, to cars and domestic appliances will increasingly be controlled via smartphone apps.

CONNECTED FORMULA ONE CARS OFFER INSIGHTS OF THINGS TO COME

Yesterday I attended what for me was the highlight of the entire show so far; Keynote 8 of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona: "Qualcomm & MERCEDES AMG Petronas Formula One Team". The event was billed as a keynote speech by Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, but it turned out to be more of a "fireside chat". I live broadcast the panel via Periscope, which consisted of Derek Aberle (Qualcomm’s president), Lewis Hamilton (Formula One World Champion), and Paddy Lowe (Executive Director, Technical Mercedes AMG Petronas). The session was moderated by Nicki Shields, TV Presenter & Journalist for Formula E & CNN.

The event covered many different industry sectors including manufacturing, transport, health, logistics, government, energy and automotive. Exhibitors from across Europe showcased cutting-edge technologies, and over 200 speakers shared industry knowledge and insights. As I wandered through the expo area, I came across an exhibitor called ThingWorx, that provides an apps platform that makes it easy for developers to build, deploy and evolve applications for the IoT.

AMAZON'S ALEXA WINS SUPER BOWL 50

As everyone in the free world knows, it was Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, and due to the 8hr time difference between London and San Francisco, live coverage of the game didn't commence till 11pm. This meant that an early night was out of the question; not a great start to my busy working week. In fact, I didn't hit the sack (no pun intended), until 5am so when my alarm went off at the usual time, I felt more than a little bleary-eyed.

MINI LAUNCHES AUGMENTED REALITY GLASSES FOR DRIVING

It looks like Mini's decided to join the silly face fashion brigade with the launch of a prototype pair of augmented reality glasses that enable the driver to see through a vehicle's interior. The technology is undoubtedly groundbreaking, and has the potential to make driving safer, but with driverless cars on the horizon, will this be a still-born technology by the time it becomes commercially available?

SINGAPORE STUDENTS CREATE A 3D-PRINTED SOLAR-POWERED CAR

I came across this solar-powered car that is entirely made from 3D-printed parts! It was created by a group of Singapore's Nanyang Technological University undergrads in February. It has around 150 3D-printed parts, and it took 4 months to assemble. It has a top speed of 40 km/h (25 m/h), so I'd imagine it's intended exclusively for urban use.

An AnTI-THEFT DEVICE AUTOMATICALLY RECORDS YOUR RIDES

Once the "smart peddle" by Connected Cycle affixes to any bicycle, it can automatically record the location of the bike, track journeys, and act as a theft deterrent. A notification is sent if the bike is moved, or tampered with. A really great feature is that it doesn't need to be charged as it's self-powered. If only someone could invent a phone, or smartwatch that does that!
