Posted By Simon Montford on Dec 5 2014 Apparently Sony is behind this concept smart watch, called the "FES". It was posted on a Japanese crowdfunding website but was intentionally unbranded to gauge genuine consumer opinion without the influence of a big name. We think this trend will continue, whereby OEMs turn to crowdfunding platforms for market research objectives, as opposed to fund raising. The novel concept uses e-ink, which can be adjusted to change the watch's appearance at the click of a button. In addition to looking pretty cool, it also has the advantage of being far less power hungry than LED. Colour e-ink is in the pipeline, as is an entirely new type of colour LED, developed by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, that can display a static image for years without charge! Another ingenious solution is to use both e-ink and LED simultaneously. By layering two screens on top of each other, Shanda a Chinese OEM, has enabled their Geak Watch 2 to display both e-ink and colour LED - giving the consumer the best of both worlds.
